Is your inner athlete at odds with your RA? If your rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is well controlled, you can stay active and not aggravate your rheumatoid arthritis. Discuss your fitness goals with your physician so that he or she can advise you on what’s realistic. Choose a sport that is low impact, like swimming or biking or modify the training of a sport you love if it is tough on the joints, like running or basketball. Make sure that you wear proper gear, especially footwear. Start slowly and consult a physical therapist if needed to evaluate your fitness level and develop a training program for you. Try yoga—it will help with core flexibility and strengthening which are helpful for all activities.
